Amanda O’Brien – Australian Institute of Business

Amanda O’Brien is a Transport & Logistics Professional and the CEO and Managing Director of Australian Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd trading as Xtreme Freight with head office based in Melbourne. Amanda’s particular expertise is in strategy and solving logistical challenges for Global Freight Forwarders and increasing efficiencies in the supply chain through strong partnerships and transparent analysis. Her belief is that developing people’s talents is fundamental to achieving great results and that flexibility and outside the box thinking is the greatest catalyst for change which is essential in keeping up with globalisation.

Past experience in diverse fields ranging from Telecommunications, Airlines and Retail holding both management and procurement roles has seen Amanda involved in projects that return investment to companies with people at the core. Changing the image, increasing the efficiencies and developing seamless logistical solutions for clients in the Transport & Logistics sector is fundamental to her philosophy.

Amanda joined the committee of the Victorian Division of the SCLAA in 2012 to contribute to the growth of female participation in the industry and believes that giving back to the community and awareness of social and political issues is cognisant with greater results.

The SCLAA hosted its 3rd Thought Leadership event for 2017 on Wednesday 2nd August at Honey Bar in South Melbourne. The buzz and excitement in the room was evident throughout the evening. We had a fantastic turnout with over 60 attendees to hear from industry experts on what the future of autonomous vehicles, drones and AI looks like for the transport and logistics industry. Thankyou to Mark Tipping, Bernard Lee and Matthew Lloyd for speaking and the SCLAA committee for their hard work in making this event run smoothly.

How good is collaboration! Last night the SCLAA held a site tour to Emporium to view their start of the delivery receipt system combined with a thought leadership events and networking drinks!

We head from some amazing speakers including David Sanders Russel Thompson Paul Landgren on the important role that supply chain has in keeping our cities sustainable!

We capped off the night with Bestrane, announcing their corporate membership with SCLAA.

A Site Visit to Remember: an hour long tour of Emporium, Melbourne’s high-end, interconnected, vertical retail environment that offers a total 188,000m² of retail, with almost 2000 retailers.  During the tour, the event’s participants witnessed Emporium’s: integrated exis ting heritage facades with new buildings and extensive glazed features from a bird’s eye view; commitment to sustainability from the 24/7 washing up hub (the 40 food outlets is serve food on crockery to reduce rubbish); and innovative awarding winning approach to receiving over 100 deliveries daily in one of the most congested and parts of the city.

NSW: AXIS Rehabilitation Industry Breakfast

Despite the torrential rain, NSW members gathered at the Sofitel Wentworth on Thursday June 8 to attend the AXIS Rehabilitation Industry Breakfast. Members were keen to learn about the latest research in health and wellbeing strategies.

Axis Business Partner, Michael Tew, opened the day and introduced the first of two keynote speakers – Dr Jay Spence, from Uprise.

Dr Spence provided an overview of current research into Health and Wellbeing strategies, and the effect that these strategies can have on workplace engagement. Among the key findings was that perceived support from managers have the greatest impact on staff wellbeing. Dr Spence revealed how positive outcomes can be achieved with interventions targeting the different levels of a business, from the individual to the organisation. Dr Spence remained afterwards to discuss mental health and wellbeing strategies with many of the attendees.

Following Dr Spence’s presentation, David Brentnall (Managing Partner from Axis) highlighted the importance of early intervention when managing workplace injuries. He provided attendees with 5 key principles highly performing workplaces are using to streamline injury management. David also presented data demonstrating the amount of money businesses save when implementing early intervention initiatives. In particular, reducing the length of time a worker is on light duties, and reducing the likelihood of a worker developing a chronic condition. In one year, this saved a truck manufacturer more than 80% in statutory claims cost.

Some great questions were raised by the audience during Q&A time, regarding implementation of onsite physiotherapy clinics. David highlighted that providing a suite of additional injury prevention services; such as risk assessments, task analyses, and health and wellbeing initiatives, makes good business sense.

It was a terrific breakfast, with many staying to network until the end.

Last night, 15 June, marked the successful launch of the inaugural VIC-TAS SCLAA mentoring program at RMIT Building 80. Participants are treated to fun-filled activities that broke the ice, as well as interesting anecdotes about past mentoring relationships from our senior members. Mentees were also given a few tips on how to engage new industry contacts for the networking drinks event that followed the launch.

We would like to give special mention to our moderator, June Parker for moderating such a fun and engaging event on her birthday. We would also like to thank KNAPP, Selection Partners and RMIT  for generously supporting our goal to increase the capability of the supply chain industry through this program.
